Spring Cleaning Checklist

Spring officially begins Wednesday, March 20th and so begins the ubiquitous task of spring cleaning. To make things easier, we've created a checklist to make spring cleaning a breeze:

Indoors

-Test smoke alarms: Replace all batteries in smoke & carbon monoxide detectors. This will only take a few minutes and could potentially save lives.

-Clean your dryer vent: Most people automatically think cleaning the lint trap will remove all of the debris caused from drying your clothes, but it doesn’t. Cleaning out your dryer vent at least once a year reduces the risk of a home fire.

-Fire Extinguishers: Check your fire extinguisher once a year; including the hose and nozzle to be sure that they are in good condition. Also be sure that the pressure gauge is in the green range. Make sure your fire extinguisher is in an accessible location.

-Furnace: Clean or replace the filter on your furnace.

-Water Heater: Check for leaks & corrosion

Outdoors

-Gutters: Remove leaves & debris and ensure all downspouts are facing away from your house. While you’re there, check gutters for any holes or cracks that may have formed over the winter.

-Roof: Check for any damaged or missing shingles. You may also want to check your attic for any signs of leaks. You may want to contact your insurance agent to see if your homeowners policy might help cover repairs.

-Landscaping: Inspect tree for damage or rot and remove any dead trees that may blow over during a storm.

Maintaining your home periodically throughout the year can help save money & keep your home safe. Happy cleaning!
